Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is located among the cardamom hill ranges in Thekkady near Kumily, in the Idduki district of Kerala, India. It covers a total area of 777 sq. km and is located at an altitude of 1700 mt.
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a famous tiger and wild elephant reserve. Besides this, it is also famous for its 100 years old artificial lake. Apart from Elephants, the other animals that can be seen in the Periyar wildlife sanctuary are Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Dole or Indian Wild Dog. Four species of primates can also be found at Periyar - the rare lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Common Langur and Bonnet Macaque.
Apart from animals, the birds that can be seen at the Periyar wildlife sanctuary include Darters, Cormorants, Kingfishers, the great Malabar Hornbill and racket-tailed Drongoes. Besides animals and birds, approximately 2000 species of flowering plants, 171 grass species and 143 species of orchids could be found at Periyar wildlife sanctuary. Apart from Elephant Safari, boat safari is also available in the Periyar wildlife sanctuary for the visitors.
