Fatehpur Sikri - UNESCO World Heritage Site

The first planned city of Mughals

Fatehpur Sikri, a world heritage site in Agra district, was constructed by Mughal emperor Akbar in 1571. It was the first planned city of the Mughals, which had the efficient system of drainage and water-supply.

The important monuments in the city were built of red sandstone and its style is based on borrowings from Hindu, Persian and Indo-Muslim traditions. Today, Fatehpur Sikri is a deserted, ghost city, popular among tourists and archeologists.
